The Blue Boot Rodeo is working with its donors and the Town of Grand Isle to try and save lives on the island.

Over the past several days, the Town of Grand Isle and volunteers have been working to add life ring posts that will have life-savings rings for people to use in case of emergency. Those posts and rings will be placed in front of the rock jetties on Grand Isle Beach - historically one of the most dangerous places to swim on the island due to rip currents that frequent that part of the island.

Those posts were donated by the Blue Boot Foundation to the island.

The Blue Boot Rodeo was started last year - an event created to raise awareness to childhood drowning. The event and foundation is run by Nicole and Darby Bourgeois after they lost their son, Riley, to an accidental drowning. The Bourgeois family has made it its mission to help as many people as it can.

"If we can save just one life, it's worth it," Darby Bourgeois said at last year's rodeo.

The Foundation also raises funds to create scholarships for local high school children, while also working to give drowning prevention education to local schools.

This project, Blue Boot said, was sparked from the continued support of the community toward the cause.

"We want to thank our donors and volunteers for your continued support of our organization," a social media post on Blue Boot's Facebook Page said. "Will keep you all posted once they are finished."

The 2020 Blue Boot Rodeo is scheduled for July 10-11, assuming conditions clear with the COVID-19 pandemic.
