Officials are continuing to urge swimmers on Grand Isle to avoid the island's rock jetties – a spot where rip currents often make conditions highly dangerous to swimmers.
Officials with the Blue Boot Rodeo said that this past weekend alone, 5 swimmers needed to use life rings to be saved from the rocks.
In recent years, the Blue Boot Foundation has placed life rings around Grand Isle. That idea has saved dozens of lives since its inception with seemingly a new story of a life saved coming every weekend.
The island's rocks are particularly deadly. Last year, there were multiple reported drownings near the rocks – an always troublesome spot because of the current and undertow produced in that area. This summer, there have not bee any known drownings on the island, but there have been multiple incidents where first responders were called needing to assist a struggling swimmer and/or the life rings were needed to rescue someone.
"Please stay off of and stay away from the rocks at the beach," a statement from the Blue Boot Rodeo reads. "You don't realize how strong the current and undertow is at and near the rocks."
